SmartWings Roller Blinds Review — 2 Years of Blackout Blinds on Autopilot
Two years ago, I put motorized blackout roller blinds on the two sunniest windows in the house — and they've basically run themselves ever since. These are the SmartWings roller blinds, Matter version, one in the living room and one in the dining room. Here's the honest two-year take.
My Setup
The setup: these are made-to-order roller blinds with blackout fabric, and I picked the Matter motor, so they talk to everything — they came with a remote, but they're also connected to Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Home Assistant all at once. And I added the solar chargers, which turned out to be the smartest money in the whole order.
Daily Life: Good Morning, Goodnight, and Chasing the Sun
Day to day, we run them by voice. Saying good morning to Alexa opens the blinds; saying goodnight closes them. When the sun starts heating the house up, they close on their own, and when the sun moves off, they reopen. Blackout fabric plus sun-aware routines means the two brightest rooms in the house stay dark when we want them dark and cooler in the summer.
Battery and the Solar Chargers — With One Caveat
And the battery is fantastic, especially with the solar chargers stretching it. One honest caveat from my house: the eaves shade our panels, so they don't get full sun, and I still plug the blinds in now and then. In full sun they'd do even better. Without solar, SmartWings rates a charge at four to six months.
Reliability After 2 Years
Mechanically, they have been extremely reliable for two years — and they roll up straight and even, no crooked drift. The motors are quiet: you'll hear one running in the same room, but that's it.
The One Flaw: Platform Disconnects
So why not a higher score? The blinds themselves almost never miss — but their connection does. Every so often one drops off a smart home platform, and until you sort it out, that platform can't see or control it. That is the main reason this is an eight and not higher. For a blind that's sold on being smart, the smarts occasionally going missing is a real annoyance.
Price
I paid $1,200 for both blinds two years ago — and a warning on price: it depends heavily on your window size and the options you pick, so yours will land wherever your windows land. The solar panels are a $49.99 add-on each — even with my eaves stealing their sun, I recommend them.
✅ Pros
- Extremely reliable for 2 years — mechanically near-flawless, and they still roll up straight and even.
- Every platform at once — the Matter motor lives in Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Home Assistant simultaneously; remote included.
- Routines that run themselves — good-morning/goodnight voice control plus sun-aware closing that keeps bright rooms cooler.
- Fantastic battery — the solar chargers stretch every charge; SmartWings rates 4–6 months per charge even without them.
- Quiet motors — audible in the same room, and that's it.
❌ Cons
- Platform disconnects — every so often a blind drops off a smart home platform and can't be seen or controlled by it until you sort it out.
- Solar needs sun — eaves shade my panels, so I still plug the blinds in now and then despite the chargers.
- Price is custom — made-to-order sizing and options move the price a lot; my two were $1,200.
The Verdict. Eight out of ten. Custom blackout blinds that open, close, and chase the sun on their own — docked for connections that occasionally wander off. If you want real custom blinds that live in Alexa, HomeKit, and Home Assistant at the same time, SmartWings is the easiest yes I've found — just budget for the solar panels. And yes, I'd buy them again.
SmartWings Roller Blinds FAQ
Do SmartWings blinds work with Alexa, HomeKit, and Home Assistant at the same time?
Yes — with the Matter motor, mine are connected to Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Home Assistant all at once. Day to day we mainly run them by Alexa: saying good morning opens them, saying goodnight closes them, and they close on their own when the sun starts heating the house up, then reopen when the sun moves off.
How long does the SmartWings battery last? Do the solar panels work?
The battery is fantastic, especially with the solar chargers stretching it. SmartWings rates a charge at four to six months without solar. One caveat from my house: the eaves shade our panels, so they don't get full sun, and I still plug the blinds in now and then. In full sun they'd do even better. The solar panels are a $49.99 add-on each (smartwingshome.com, checked October 2026), and I recommend them.
Are SmartWings blinds loud?
The motors are quiet: you'll hear one running in the same room, but that's it. Two years in, the noise has never been an issue in the living room or dining room.
Do SmartWings roller blinds roll up straight?
Yes. After two years of daily use, mine still roll up straight and even, with no crooked drift.
How much do SmartWings blinds cost?
I paid $1,200 for both of my blinds two years ago — one in the living room, one in the dining room. A warning on price: it depends heavily on your window size and the options you pick, so yours will land wherever your windows land. The solar panels are a $49.99 add-on each.
What's wrong with the SmartWings blinds?
The blinds themselves almost never miss — but their connection does. Every so often one drops off a smart home platform, and until you sort it out, that platform can't see or control it. That is the main reason this is an eight and not higher.
